Wildfire Post Mortem: A reflection.

Well we crossed the finish line! Yes it's not the video we intended to release right now and the audio still needs a few touch ups but it is definitely headed in the right direction at this point. Lets go back and start at the beginning though...

What is wildfire?

Wildfire was a demo song that Brisbane local artist Lochlan J Farr wrote and I approached him to help him record and produce the song in the studio at the QANTM SAE Brisbane campus.

The plan:

Our plan was to record and produce an acoustic version of the song and then record him for a music video playing it on the rooftop balcony on campus. When this was done he gave permission for myself and another student to have free range and to make an electronic version of the song.

The process:

We recorded the song in two four hour sessions to polish off the original recording of the song and to have as minimal mistakes in it as possible. We used the Shure SM7B microphones for the vocal recording as he likes to sing in a higher range and this microphone can withstand it without distorting the sound too much. For the guitar we used the AT2050 multi-pattern mic as it can be set specifically to focus on the high and low end of the guitar at the same time for the recording.

Obstacles:

As with any projects we hit some hurdles. Due to the loss of a team member due to unforeseen circumstances and also the artist and myself not being able to agree on a final mix we had to delay the music video. The original video plan and a different final mix will be uploaded at a later date when the artist and myself has time to go in the studio and mix together at the same time so we can change things in real time and work to find something we both can agree on.

Changes:

With my audio engineer partner out and my electronic music expertise with him I did not have enough knowledge or experience to create an electronic version of the song. I am still researching and this is in the works still but will not be ready until a later date. Also with the film student also standing by for the artist to be ready for filming I received her recommendations and advice to make a video of the song playing through pictures of the artist. This is not the intended video but it was good visual aid and highlight some areas in the recording that need attention. Some of the timing needs work, more reverb added to the vocal and the mix needs to be done a lot louder then what it is currently. These are things that will be worked on and fixed for the final video.

Future Plans/ ideas:

When all of the above is reflected on and a plan is set in place when all of the teams schedule allows, all of these areas mentioned above will be worked on and a final video will be uploaded to youtube when all parties are happy with the result. However the deliverables show where we are at currently and ultimately highlights where need to be heading. As this was my first real experience in being lead for a project and doing all of the mixing and selecting the artist, choosing some of the direction of the project I now know the areas I will need to improve in and will work on those during the summer break. The areas I need to work on are mixing, working with an artist to communicate my directions and plans to keep the project moving and working on my adaptation of plans when things change.
