Tales from the Margins: A Discussion Panel.

Updated: Oct 27, 2019

screen grab from First screen test

Myself and fellow audio producer, Quinn Kallisti, are organizing to host a panel discussion. This will be a creative industry panel discussion about some of the experiences that marginalized individuals face within the creative industry from the perspective of representatives themselves.

This project is important to me creatively as well as personally because I have type one diabetes and BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) and I am a part of the LGBTQIA+ community and their is often a stigma around people with chronic health conditions doing such strenuous and demanding careers, as well as the stigma of being an LGBTQIA+ Identifying person. This project is ultimately to bring awareness about these conditions or what being a apart of these marginalized communities can mean for some people and also to help find and provide mentors or role models like us for the next generation.

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 23RD, 2019

Quinn and I had our first meeting via discord. For this discussion we talked about different formats and possible layouts for our project. Originally I suggested we hold interviews with representatives one on one. Then we talked about If we would just be sharing our own experiences and stories, as Quinn is a Transgender Female she has views and opinions that we wanted to explore and talk about in our podcast discussion. We then moved onto other ways we could have this discussion and blend all of the of the things that make us a part of marginalized communities into the project. This meeting was when we decided on having a panel discussion with guest speakers so we could expand and hear the stories of other people either starting out in the creative industry or already a part of it that identified or had "an invisible condition" that made them stand out from the mainstream.

After some correspondence between both producers, Quinn posted a call out online for a film person to record our panel discussion so that we could publish it on a platform that would enable the most exposure. Then we split the list of guests who responded or we personally chose to reach out to and sent some emails to potential speakers for the panel. Once we heard interest from Nicolai Heinze to film our panel we made a group chat to organize a meeting between all of us to discuss and test layouts and potential rooms for our panel discussion.

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2ND, 2019.

When we decided on a room location we began testing the room for sound quality, lighting and positioning of our panel. On the day we used a Focusrite Clarett 8 Pre audio interface and a sm58 Mic just to test the interface to see if it would meet our requirements for our project. We were planning for between 8-10 guest speakers at the time. This equipment test was helpful to us as we worked out the laptop we had for the protools rig didn't initially work with the interface as it didn't have the software needed to acknowledge or use the interface. If we left the testing to the day it would of wasted valuable time of ours and our guest speakers to download the software drivers. After this test day were were still undecided on Mic, Mic setup and table set up but we were set on the recording space.

Signal testing

. TUESDAY OCTOBER 15TH, 2019

Today we did a mock set up and continued to test how we would like to set up the discussion panel. We spent the day with the table and chair and mic set up. We decided to go with smaller mic stands so that they didn't stick too far out above the table but were high enough to be facing the speaker at seated level. To reduce too much of a cluster and over loading the Focusrite with too many mic and cables we went with four Sennheiser MD 421 II Dynamic microphones on stereo bars on two mic stands for a nicer look. After testing the audio this set up we decided it doesn't negatively impact the audio signal at all and a clear signal can be heard from all areas around the table set up.

After We were happy with our setup for the audio side of things we turned the focus onto the visual side of things. Quinn and I worked with Nicolai to test positioning of the cameras for recording and discussed what we would like to be shot from each camera.

8 Days out from recording date, Monday OCTOBER 28TH, 2019

At this point of the project we have received confirmation of attendance from majority of our Panel speakers to attend our recording of the discussion between 12 pm and 3 pm on the 28.10.2019.

Our confirmed guest speakers include:

- Abdul Khan: Who will be speaking from the viewpoint of a POC (person of color) within the creative industry.

- Evangeline Gibbons: Will be speaking a person who identifies as non-binary viewpoint.

- Jasmine Prasser: T1D viewpoint within film industry.

- Rose Parker: LGBTQIA+ identifying person and being a woman within audio industry viewpoint.

- Cypress Reeves: Trans person and disability viewpoint.

Also in the discussion and possibly driving the discussion will be Quinn and I.

We are set to finish drawing up the agenda to provide to our guest speakers by the end of next week and will in that time be preparing them about the proposed topics to prepare them for the day.

In the lead up to the day I have also been watching discussions of 3 or more people online to clarify our audio and set designs and these are the ones we have gotten a rough guideline for our project, in relation to driving the conversation in a smooth and natural manner and gather ideas of how to ensure we capture clear audio on the day. This is just some of the ones I have found relevant to our project.

Meeting Agenda:

Upon having a quick meeting with Quinn I decided to lead the documentation of the agenda for our discussion panel. When I had typed up all the information We had wanted to include within the agenda we discussed having another meeting to finish working on it together to get the best possible version to hand over to our guest speakers, Below is the Agenda I drew up for us.

I sent my draft to Quinn and we talked back and forth via messenger about some things to add to fine tune the agenda.

Friday OCTOBER 25th, 2019

On Friday Quinn and I decided to sit down together and fix up the agenda focusing on ensuring the language is broad and thoroughly inclusive but to the point of the discussion content.

Quinn and myself messaging the agenda to our guest speakers for the panel.
