Track teardown: Project reflection

Updated: Dec 14, 2018

Artist: Ellery

single art for five 2 ten

Ellery is a young Brisbane local on the rise. Influences like flume and two feet give him drive as an original artist. Late 2018 he decided it was time to have one of his original songs recorded and produced and to get some in the studio experience. He is a creative type by nature and spends his down time enjoying life's experiences to get some writing inspiration for his music. His first and only produced song is a song called five 2 ten and is part of the electro - acoustic genre.

Embodiment of Track: Five 2 Ten

The overall vibe of the track is someone who is chilling out and getting caught in their thoughts, this song being the result and I feel the song five 2 ten encompasses that perfectly. The track goes through two consistent emotions one being slow and chill and relaxed and then in the choruses and the emphasised sections the rhythm becomes more intense, upbeat and edgy. The intention for the track was a focus on the electronic components as this was the artists test the waters type of song and he wanted to get more practice lyrically writing in small sections.

Arrangement:

We started with the vocal and the guitar that was recorded live in studio then we worked on the electronic elements to fit around the acoustic components. Electric guitar, bass, drums and synths were added in around the vocal and original acoustic guitar elements. The Average BPM for the song is 160 as shown in the diagram below.

Production:

some of the electronic components

The live recording of the vocal and acoustic guitar was recorded and processed with the DAW protools. The microphone we used for the vocal and guitar recording was the Rode NT2-a. We used this dual pattern condenser microphone as when we worked out Ellery was out of time playing and singing at the same time, it was easy to switch the signal pattern of the mic to pick up his vocal and then the playing of the guitar in different takes. In protools we fixed any slight timing issues with the guitar and vocal and we comped the song similar to the final result. We left some spaces within the audio to allow for the electronic additions to the song and when we needed a bit more lyrical content the verse was repeated. All of the electronic music production was done with Ableton Live and the sampler Kontakt was used to make up the drum, bass and synth components to the song.

Sonic Content:

The BPM of the song sat at an average of 160 BPM. The basic structure of the song is as follows: Instrumental intro, verse, chorus/hook, instrumental/electronic dance or house music section, repeated verse, chorus/hook, instrumental fade out. There was a slight reverb on the vocals and then in the mixing electronic process the dynamics for the vocal and for the guitar changed from dry to wet.

Subjective Feel:

The tone of the song is a mix of laid back in the vocal parts and then when it is the electronic music section it builds to an upbeat and happy or bouncy type of feel before dropping back to chill out in the vocal parts..

Objective feel:

Some techniques that were involved in the production of the track include recording, mixing and processing while developing personal knowledge into synths and electronic music production. The reverb used gives the vocal an echo and more of a sharp presence that cuts through the electronic components. The vocal was also over dubbed with a slight delay on the overdub to give the vocal a more surrounding and grouping feel and to make the listener feel like more then one person is expressing their ideas in the song. Wet vs Dry: The dynamics at the start of the project were all natural due to the acoustic recording however during the addition of the electronic components we had to change the wet/dry vocal ratio to blend better with the electronic elements.

Final thoughts:

Overall I feel that the song produced covered all of the intentions we had planned. However at some point I personally would like to add in a female verse as a response to the Male artists thoughts and ideas and to also provide another dynamic quality to the song.
