Introduction to Electronic Music Production

Updated: Dec 14, 2018

Hi there, if you have stumbled across this blog then you are interested in learning some things about the music industry and following my journey. This blog is about finding my way into electronic music production. I am originally from a song writing and acoustic performance / live studio background. However, while studying at sae QANTM in Brisbane I am taking full advantage of the resources and throwing myself in to all aspects and the different methods of producing music to learn as much as i can about producing my own (hopefully one day label quality) music.

One of my favourite things to do (other then spending time writing music and doing recording in the studio) is to watch and learn from other artists and professionals in the field. This trimester I am working with another student who is focused and wants to specialise in EMP and how it all comes together. One of the things we spoke about was DAWS and which out of pro tools, logic or Ableton would be best for electronic music production. The program he likes to use and mix with and he is the most familiar with a DAW called Ableton, this program is stocked full of plug in's and samples that can be used to create your own beats and sounds for your song, original or cover/ remix. This can be done in a studio setting or from the comfort of your bedroom.

What are the main production qualities of EMP?

In doing the process of learning about EMP I learned quickly the importance of synthesisers, learning about them inside and out. Learning about how to distort sounds in the right way for your track based on the effects you are trying to go for. Samples are your friend but be careful how much of the sample you manipulate and use in your piece as using a certain amount of a sample could conflict with the original owners copyright. MIDI key board control for your virtual instruments and arrangement and away you go to making music either by yourself or you can include a group of professionals to help with the mixing/ mastering process. Essentially electronic music production reduces the need to have present the live instruments or band that is usually needed to record or make music.

how are they achieved and typical workflow/ process?

These qualities are achieved with the equipment and hardware available to music producers. Such equipment can include: an audio interface, a microphone, studio speakers, midi keyboard control, DAW software and a sampler such as Kontakt. Once you have all of these things you can essential find yourself a reference track (or song you like) and try out some samples and synth patches to recreate what you hear in the song, You can also research your favourite artists and look into the techniques they instil in their day to day work to get inspired and to get you started on your own working process. You may start with a basic beat and then go from there.

It is also best to do some research of your own or to pursue the study of EMP if you want to learn more about it. It is also helpful if you have access to Lynda.com which is a website that has courses and tutorial videos on just about anything you need to know to get you started in the music industry. I found that the link below to be especially helpful in learning the basics of EMP and it shows you the basics on how to use Ableton live.

Within my research I sought out to find artists that have an electronic music sound and I found a song from 2am club called worry about you. While this song is not my usual style of song or sound that I go for in my personal work I am always keen to learn new skills and sounds within the industry and now my challenge will be to go out and replicate this song on a personal project. Until next time!
